About Ullaskar Datt

Ullaskar Dutta (16 April 1885 – 17 May 1965) was an Indian progressive related with Anushilan Samiti and Jugantar of Bengal, and was a near relate of Barindra Ghosh. He was the central bomb creator of the Jugantar group until Hemchandra Kanungo returned from Paris learning political hypothesis and dangerous chemistry.

A discussion and memorial meeting was held on the occasion of the 58th death anniversary of anti-British revolutionary Ullas Kar Dutt. It was held at the National Press Club in the capital on Saturday.

Shahiduzzan Sarkar, President of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law Ministry, was the chief guest on the occasion. Principal Jobeda Khatun Parul was the special guest. Mofiz Uddin (Additional Secretary, Ministry of Finance).

The meeting was inaugurated by Shiuli Azad, Member of Parliament of Comilla Reserved-12 Constituency. Ullas Kar Dutt Central Memory Parishad Executive President Md. Shahinur Islam (Joint Secretary, Law and Judiciary) and General Secretary Advocate Sohail Rana presided over the meeting.

Former Member of Parliament Advocate Ziaul Haque Mridha was the chief negotiator. The negotiators demanded that revolutionary Ullas Kar Dutt’s ancestral home in Kalikach village of Sarail in Brahmanbaria be preserved and a museum and tourist center be constructed.

The biography of revolutionary Ullas Kar Dutt was demanded to be included in textbooks.

The name most associated with the revolutionary Khudiram Bose in the anti-British movement in the Indian subcontinent is Ullaskar Dutta of Kalikach village under Sarail Thana of Brahmanbaria district.

Ullaskar Dutt along with another revolutionary Hemchandra Das made the first hand grenade in Bengal – the one Khudiram Bose threw at the car of the tyrannical Magistrate Kingsford. Khudiram Bose was hanged for the crime of throwing bombs and Ullaskar Dutta was first hanged in the famous ‘Alipur Bomb Case (1908)’ for the crime of making bombs and Dipantar was sentenced to life imprisonment on appeal.

Ullaskar Dutta is very little talked about in Bangladesh except in Kalikach, Sarail, Brahmanbaria and Comilla and to tell the truth – people of Bangladesh know very little about Ullaskar Dutta. But Ullaskar Dutta is a very well known name in India especially in West Bengal, Assam and Tripura and efforts have been and are being made to preserve.

Ullaskar Dutta’s memory in various ways. Among them, ‘Ullaskar Dutt Memorial’, ‘Revolutionary Ullaskar Dutt Road’ in Kolkata. There is a bust and memorial plaque of Ullaskar Dutt at Silchar in Assam and ‘Ullaskar Dutt Academy’ at Tripura. Moreover, arrangements have been made to preserve the memory of Ullaskar Dutt in the cellular jail of Andaman Island.

But unfortunately, Ullaskar Dutta’s ancestral residence standing as a witness of time in Kalikach village under Sarail upazila of Brahmanbaria district is still preserved. No effective initiative has been taken in this country. Although many visitors from different parts of the country and India are coming to Kalikachch to see the memory of the great revolutionary Ullaskar Dutt.

Recently, several individuals and organizations have come forward and are working in various ways to preserve the ancestral home of revolutionary Ullaskar Dutt on historical grounds. In this regard, various news, reports and writings have been published and disseminated through print and electronic media and social media.
